A Million Little Pieces

On today's Oprah show she had James Frey author of A Million Little Pieces on the show. There had been a whole drama unfolding over his memoir over the last few weeks since the smoking gun website found that the amount of time he claims to have spent in jail in his memoir is exaggerated. James appeared on Larry King Live to defend himself and claimed that approx 18 pages of his 300+ page book were not exactly true.

Today I saw an Oprah I have never seen before. She was MAD!!!! I can't say I blame her. When Oprah speaks millions listen and I'm sure it made James a very rich man. When Oprah did her bra fitting episode sales and bra fittings at Sack's went up by large amounts. While I still enjoyed reading the book and yes the fundamental message of the journey to being a recovering alcoholic and drug addict are still valid I question why he would have made some of the changes he did.

In the book at the rehab centre he falls in love with another patient. He leaves the centre and in the book 2 people go to pick him up (today he said it was only 1) he was supposed to go back and meet up with Lilly and in the book she hangs herself the very day he would have found his way back to her (today he said she actually slit her wrists) These details had he used the real details would not have taken anything away from the book.

My understanding is that a lot of addicts really found a connection to this book I just hope they don't stop holding on now that this has all happened
